Full Description
Former corn mill, built in 1824. A long 1-storey and attic rubble building with ashlar facing on the lower part of the wheel gable. The skeleton of a 6-spoke, low breast wood and iron paddle wheel was recorded as extant in 1977. Described in the Kincardineshire OS Name Books, 1863, volume 16 (S1/19/16/57) as: ‘A substantial mill and farmsteading. The machinery of the mill is principally adapted for grinding corn and barley. Motive power, water. Property of George Taylor Esqr. Kirktonhill.’. The mill building, constructed of sandstone blocks and fieldstone rubble, is single-storey and attic, with grey stone roof tiles (much now replaced with corrugated metal roofing). Additions to the building include a brick building and wood-built shed. On the north-northeast wall of the mill is an historic water mark on a sandstone plaque which has been whitewashed. There are cracks in most walls (much possibly from flood damage) and decorative cast iron plates to ties. The south-southwest facade of the mill has an ashlar ground floor gable, the site of the wheel ,the aperture for the drive shaft having been infilled with stone and concrete. The remains of the wheel pit are adjacent. The mill lade runs from the north. Standing building survey of the mill and steading building was carried out by Cameron Archaeology in January 2025 ahead of proposed conversion. Much of the building was not accessible at the time of survey given the state of collapse of walls and roof. It had suffered fire damage at an unknown date. The waterwheel infrastructure was recorded, the wheel now absent and the pit infilled. The steading buildings show at least three phases of development, before the building was subject to flooding and went out of use. On the exterior north-northeast wall is a sandstone plaque incised ‘Water mark 4th August 1829’ the day of the Muckle Spate: the plaque has been restored since 1950 when the inscription was illegible.
