Full Description

Mansion house, still in use. The northern part was built in 1677 to circa 1680 for Sir John Falconer of Balmakelly. Thomas Wilkie of Edinburgh was the builder, and possibly also the architect. The southern part was possibly added in 1743. There is a harled three-storey main block to the rubble-built northern section. The five-bay front elevation at the east is flanked by square single-bay towers with pyramidal roofs and a paved area between. The centre door is finely moulded with an armorial panel above, and there is a weather vane dated 1680. The four-bay rear elevation has irregular staircase windows. The two-storey and basement south wing is constructed from ashlar, and is harled on the east and west elevations. The interiors are little changed, except for the addition of some modern fireplaces. Set in a designed landscape, there is a well to the south and gardens to the east, a walled garden (NO66NE0027) to the north with a sundial (NO66NE0029) within, the Coach House (NO66NE0031) to the northeast and the West Gates (NO66NE0013) to the west. Photographic recording was carried out in 2023 ahead of proposed works.

Period Notes
The northern section was built in 1677 - circa 1680. The southern wing possibly added in 1743. It was listed on 11/06/1971.
