Full Description
Farmhouse and farmstead, shown on the historic OS maps. The OS 1st edition map shows the farmhouse as rectangular, with a west, east and north range forming a quadrangular building, with an entrance at the northwest corner. It is set in garden grounds with a large walled garden enclosure to the southeast. To the northwest is an open quadrangular steading with rectangular projections on the west external and internal elevations, a rectangular building in the court, a rectangular building on the external northwest elevation and the entrance in the northwest corner. A row of farm cottages are to the north of the steading, with a well to the northwest of the cottages. On the OS 2nd edition map, the farmhouse is shown with an additional building on the northeast corner and there are additional rectangular buildings shown on the external east elevation and in the southeast corner of the walled garden. The steading is shown as roof over, with a small square court remaining open with the entrance through the south range. An additional two buildings are shown at the south end of the row of farm cottages, one attached the southern cottage and one adjacent to it to the northeast. The listed building covers the farmhouse, a 2-storey, 3-window property, constructed of painted ashlar with margins, with a Roman Doric porch, fluted necking and a fanlight doorway within. The eaves cornice has a panel at the centre inscribed, 'Jas. Walker', together with '17' '89' at the skews. On the current OS map, the east range of the farmhouse is no longer shown and the north range is shown only by remaining partial wall lines. The steading is no longer shown, replaced by six modern residential properties, Nos. 1 - 6 Abbotsfield Grange. The original row of four farm cottages remain, with an additional house built on the north end, forming Nos. 1 - 5 Newbigging Farm Cottages.
