Full Description

House, gate lodge and farmstead, set in extensive garden grounds, shown on the historical OS maps. On the OS 1st edition map the house is shown with a pump adjacent to the east elevation, a L-plan range to the east, a rectangular building to the southeast, garden enclosures to the southwest, including a walled garden with a rectangular building on the internal elevation of the north wall, with a smaller building on the external elevation. To the north is a T-plan gate lodge, with a well adjacent to the west. To the west is West Broomley Farm, consisting of a L-plan farmhouse and a long shallow open U-plan steading to the north, with a rectilinear projection from the external north elevation. On the OS 2nd edition map the pump is no longer shown east of the main house and a rectangular second north gate lodge, Broomley House Lodge is shown adjacent to the southeast of the earlier one. The walled garden to the southwest of the house has a greenhouse attached to the internal elevation of the north wall with two buildings on the external elevation and one in the northwest corner. A rectangular outbuilding is shown northwest of West Broomley Farm and the steading has additional ranges forming an E-plan, with a circular horse-mill attached to the northwest corner and the earlier central north projection no longer shown. The listed building (LB4678) covers the Broomley House, built circa 1750 on a U-plan, with a 2-storey and basement main block. Originally plain 5-window with a cavetto splay to the door. The right hand pair of windows are pushed out with a 3/8 bay, probably dating from 1792. The south wing is single-storey with full basement. The north wing is single-storey offices. Plain vernacular, harled with margins, now stripped on the west frontage to reveal the red rubble construction. On the current OS edition map, only one north gate lodge is now shown, Broomley Lodge. The east range of West Broomley Farm steading is shown as a ruin, the circular horse-mill has been replaced by a rectangular building, with other alterations and additions in the eastern half. A house has been built in the walled garden.
