Full Description

Former watermill, situated to the southwest of Mains of Dun (NO65NE0061) and built in the late-18th or early-19th century. It is shown in use and annotated as a corn mill on the 1st edition OS map, but annotated as disused on the 2nd edition OS map. The original mill building is oriented east/west, and there is a single-storey addition oriented north/south projecting from the western side of the north-facing rear of the mill. The kiln is situated at the west gable of the main mill building. It is recessed from the South-facing elevation, and is also adjacent to the north addition where the mill and addition join, creating a slightly disjointed T-plan building. The east gable of the mill has skewputts and an apex finial, and there was an enclosed overshot wheel on the east gable, which has now gone. A low lean-to with a corrugated-iron roof had been added to the west of the kiln, but has since been removed. The kiln itself has previously fallen into disrepair, becoming heavily overgrown and roofless. However, it now has a new pyramidal roof and an apex weathervane. The original mill has evidence of being raised in height on two occasions. The south-facing elevation has a central door on the first floor, which now has no exterior access. The low wall to the south of the mill running east/west previously curved to provide access to the door, however it has since been straightened to run past the mill and now curves to join the kiln to the west. There were two buildings to the north-west of the mill, however only the northern one now remains, with a gable at the east and a piended roof to the west. The roofs of all the remaining buildings are slate.

Period Notes
Mill built in the late 18th or early 19th century, with later additions and alterations. By the circa 1888 2nd edition OS map, it is shown as disused. The kiln is shown as roofless in the 1970s, but by 2008 it has been re-roofed. It was listed on 15/01/1980.
