Full Description

Former parish church, in residential use, and a graveyard. The church is dated 1791, and was built on or near the site of its predecessor re-using earlier stonework. A church is on record in on the site in the 12th century as being dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and is known as St Mary's of Old Montrose. According to antiquarian sources there is a St Mary's Well within the immediate vicinity. The current church was renovated in 1818 and again in 1883. It is shown on the 1st edition OS map as a rectangular church set within an irregular graveyard. On the 2nd edition OS map there is a small addition to the north elevation. It is a small oblong Gothic church, constructed of rubble with a slate roof. It has a classic belfry surmounted by a large urn finial. A heraldic gravestone bearing the figure of a man in civilian dress and dating from circa 1530 was kept in the church vestry, but has since been moved to Montrose Museum. The graveyard contains the First World War Commonwealth war grave of Private Alexander Anderson, Scots Guards. The Maryton War Memorial is at the southern entrance to the graveyard (NO65NE0087).
