Full Description

Farmstead, still in use, probably originating from the later 18th century with various 19th and 20th century additions and alterations. On the 1st edition map it is depicted as two modified L-shaped buildings which form a wide but narrow court open at the south-west. To the south are a mill pond with mill dam and sluice and a small rectangular building. By the 2nd edition map the small building to the south has been removed and the two L-shaped buildings have been modified and extended, with the court partially roofed. The 2006 map shows that the two buildings are still in use in further modified condition and that the pond is still marked. Described in the OS Name Books Forfar county Vol 80 (OS/1/14/80) as: 'a farm house and offices, arable farm, gardens etc attached, occupied by Mr James Bruce. The property of John Hay, Esquire'. A Level 1 Standing Building survey was carried out in 2018 by AOC prior to proposed demolition. A farm is depicted on this site in 1794 but not on Roy's map of 1747-1755, so the original farm was likely built during this period. During the survey four phases of construction were recorded throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
