Full Description
Mid 19th century 2-storey gabled villa, set in extensive grounds. Shown on the OS 1st edition map, as a T-plan house, with a walled garden to the east, further gardens to the southeast and south, an open U-plan steading to the north, with a circular horse-mill attached to the northwest external elevation and a rectangular gate lodge west of the house. The OS 2nd edition map shows major changes to the house and landscape layout, with the former west gatelodge no longer shown, replaced with an additional driveway and South Gatelodge (NO64SW0152) in the southwest corner of the site. The previous steading is no longer shown, with a replacement steading (NO64SW0151) built to the northeast of the house.
The major house alterations were designed by A. Symon of Forfar, in 1893-6, for Colin Grant, additions including prominent square-plan entrance tower on the south (southeast) front, with an important surviving interior. Built of rough-hewn rubble plinth, stugged and snecked ashlar, with droved margins and polished ashlar dressings. Single and mullioned bipartite windows with simple architraves and a plate glass sash and case glazing pattern. Elaborately sculptured pedimented dormerheads, strapwork, stepped string courses with detail in the Scottish Renaissance idiom in the 1890s period of alterations. Masonry gable apex finials and some iron weather vanes to the rear (north). Slated roof, with broad corniced ridge stacks and masonry skews. Single-storey service wing and another wing built to house heating apparatus forming a U-plan to the east. There is a pedestal style sundial, built of ashlar, in the 18th century classical style with an acanthus-leafed lower section in the garden south of the house. The building is presently subdivided as four flatted residential properties, Woodside House, The Towers, Northwood and Westwood.
