Full Description

A probably Medieval sculptured stone was recovered from the foundation of the old church of Arbirlot (MAB38310) in 1831 and is now in the garden of the manse. The stone is similar to Pictish Class I stones but is more likely to be a Class III stone, dating to 850-1600 AD. It is formed from an undressed block of whinstone some 1.7 m high and 0.85 m wide. It bears (at the top and bottom) small, inscribed crosses, while between them are two rectangular objects that may be open books. Just below the upper cross there is a small circle. Faint grooves run down the middle and side of the stone. The stone was attached to the garden wall of the manse until 1984 when it was moved to its present location, circa 45 m to the north.
