Full Description
Sculptured stone. A probably medieval (similar to Pictish Class I stones but more likely to be a Class III stone, dating between 850AD and 1600AD) sculptured stone was recovered from the foundation of the old church of Arbirlot (NO64SW0007) in 1831 and is now in the garden of the manse. It is formed from an undressed block of whinstone some 1.7m high and 0.85m wide. It bears at the top and bottom small inscribed crosses, while between them are two rectangular objects that may be open books. Just below the upper cross there is a small circle. Faint grooves run down the middle and side of the stone. The stone was attached to the garden wall of the manse until 1984 when it was moved to its present location, about 45m to the north.
