Full Description

Former textile mill complex, now partially cleared and the 'mill building converted into flats. The complex was described by Hume in the 1970s as dating to the mid 19th century. A 3-storey and attic, 4 by 9 bay main block, with a 2 storey, 2 bay engine house at one end, a 10 bay range of single-storey weaving sheds, and two 3 storey office blocks, one 3 bay, the other 5'. On the demolition of Webster's Flax Textile Mill and excavation for foundations of new buildings on 07/07/1994, a well was discovered about 10m from the Brothock Water. It was constructed of dressed local red sandstone, 5m depth with water still in it. The diameter of this well was 3 m. Built over it was a brick domed construction finished off with a cast-iron ring measuring 28 inches by 10 inches by 1 3/4 inches. It would appear that this well operated as a pump for the steam engines within the works. Probably built mid-19th century. Since infilled and built over.
