Full Description
Former Parish church, now in use as offices. It was built in 1894-96 by Sir J. J. Burnet (Glasgow), architect, on the site of its predecessor, which was built in 1580-90 replacing St Mary's Chapel (NO64SW0024) as the Parish church. The spire was built in 1831 on the site of the south-west angle tower of Arbroath Abbey (NO64SW0018) wall, which was removed to make way for it. This earlier church was destroyed by fire in 1892, although the spire remained. It is shown on the 1st edition OS map as a T-plan church. On the 2nd edition OS map it is shown as an oblong church with projections on the west elevation. It is an oblong Gothic church with north aisles and a square ashlar tower with a 152 feet (46 metre) high spire to the south-west. Within the building is a First and Second World War memorial, in the form of gold painted panelling at the front of the organ with a Latin cross and the words 'Their name liveth for evermore' in central cartouche which is flanked by lists of names from WWI, those of WWII listed below. The memorial scheme includes the 1896 Brindley and Foster organ which was overhauled and rebuilt in 1922 by E H Lawton
Period Notes
