Full Description

Site of the North British Chemical Works depicted on the OS 2nd edition map and remains of coastal defences. The works are annotated on a wartime aerial photograph as 'Briggs Compound Works' and on more recent OS map as Dowrie Works (Bitumen). The works received direct hits from bombs during the Second World War. Coastal zone assessment survey carried out by SCAPE between February and March 2009 recorded a dump of demolition material comprising brick, concrete lumps and iron. On the coast edge was a makeshift coastal defence formed from wooden barrels and oil drums filled with bitumen and with tar poured on top of them, which was presumed to have been built to protect the factory.
