Full Description
Remains of longhouses and a small enclosure, part used as a sheepfold and dip. A farmstead is depicted on the OS 1st edition map named Cronach. Also remains of a possible whin-mill. Pre-afforestation survey by Headland Archaeology in 1996 recorded the remains of three groups of buildings. To the southwest was a substantial range of 3 adjoining buildings on the outside of Ballochan dyke, the walls surviving to over 1m in height and incorporated into a later complex of sheepfolds. To the northeast of these were an L-plan range now reduced to low stone footings and with the remains of a circular horse-mill attached to the south side. The horsemill is 9m in diameter with a channel for a drive shaft leading into the building, and appears to have been added in the later 19th century as it does not appear on the 1st edition OS map. To the east are two buildings, each 5m by 12m. A small stone-filled structure close to the north end of these may be a clamp or kiln. Three other small structures lay the north and east. The OS 1st edition shows a sheepfold to the north of the buildings.
