Full Description

The war memorial at Birse commemorates the dead from Birse parish, from both World War I and II. It sits beside the road near the top of Corsedarder Hill. It is a solid tapering rectangular obelisk of rough hewn coursed grey and red granite blocks with the lettering carved into them in dressed bands. There is a small roundel with inset curved cross. The top is a stepped pyramidal shape. It was erected 4 December 1921 and designed by William Kelly. Full transcription of memorial held in AAS Digital Archive. In 1999 Birse Community Trust planted 34 native broadleaves (next to the car parking area on the opposite side of the road) in memory of the 34 'Men of Birse' named on the war memorial. There is another war memorial, a plaque listing names of those who died in World War I, attached to the south face of Birse Church (NO59NE0017).
