Full Description

War Memorial Hall, designed by A. Marshall Makenzie. It is a 2-storey, 3-bay building with 2-bay wing to the northeast, constructed of tooled, coursed, pink granite with grey dressings and finely finished margins. The principal (southeast) elevation is near-symmetrical, with a round-arched chamfered loggia to three bays of the ground floor, each with a tympanum and tooled shield on the keystone. There is a grey granite plaque above reading 'WAR MEMORIAL BUILDINGS'. The northeast and southwest elevations are asymmetrical. On the southwest elevation is a canted window with a plaque below reading 'THIS STONE WAS LAID BY MARGARET LOTHIAN BARONESS GLENTANAR, 7TH MAY 1921'. The hall is enclosed by a granite rubble boundary wall with rough-faced coping. The war memorial itself stands near the entrance to the Hall. It commemorates the dead of both World War I and II and the Korean war. It is situated on the west side of the arched entrance to the hall and is in the form of an arched five-sided recess containing stained glass windows between the memorial plaques. Each window contains a seated female figure with one of the words 'Valour, Patriotism, Victory, Peace, Freedom, Justice' under each figure. Full transcription of memorial held in AAS Digital Archive. The Formaston Stone (NO59NW0015), a Pictish cross slab dating to the circa 8th Century AD, is housed within the hall.
