Full Description

Reinforced concrete bridge over the River Dee, built in 1937 by F. A. Macdonald and Partners, Engineers, Glasgow and George Bennett Mitchell, architect. It has 7-segmental-arches and a 3-hinged portal framed. Principal arch spans 51.8 m, single flood arch to the north, five flood arches to the south. Reinforced concrete abutments and piers and coped, precast concrete block parapets. Built to replace a suspension bridge of 1832, which was no longer strong enough 'to carry modern loads' (Road Bridges in Great Britain, p.90), and had no footpaths. Due to the frequent, and often sudden flooding of the River Dee the bridge had to have as much clearance as possible, hence the 3-hinged portal frame, and the numerous flood arches.
