Summary

Eight stones within this area that may well be remains of former boundary markers or part of the old march stones of Forres, located along the west side of Cluny Hill, reported to the Archaeology Service in May 2022 by a member of the public.

Full Description

Eight stones within this area that may well be remains of former boundary markers or part of the old march stones of Forres, located along the west side of Cluny Hill, reported to the Archaeology Service in May 2022 by a member of the public. Three stones reported in the southwest of the area are located quite close together, with a stone reported at NJ 04197 58840 measuring 450 mm in height, 400 mm in width. A second stone reported at NJ 04188 58832 measuring 240 mm in height, 340 mm in width. A third stone reported at NJ 04209 58832 measuring 710 mm in height, 420 mm in width. Other stones are at various locations north of these, with the fourth stone reported at NJ 04247 58864 measuring 310 mm in height, 400 mm in width. A fifth stone reported at NJ 04250 58901 measuring 760 mm in height, 400 mm in width. A sixth stone reported at NJ 04272 58978 measuring 400 mm in height, 400 mm in width, with an additional seventh stone at NJ 04267 59018. An eighth stone reported at NJ 04275 59132 measuring 240 mm in height, 330 mm in width. They appear to be generally of sandstone, and there may be other stones hidden by the vegetation. The stones are possibly related to another boundary type marker stone (NJ05NW0523) located just inside Grant Park to the northwest, and also the Califer Stone (NJ05NE0017).
