Full Description

Remains of a fortified house, probably a Laird's house. The 19th century antiquary, Jervise, records that the house was ruinous and known as Shanno Castle or more popularly 'The Castle' or 'Auldha' and that it was erected by the Lindsays of Edzell about 1607. The OS, in 1958, described the ruins as those of a strongly built house rather than a castle, situated on a flattish area high up the hillside overlooking the ruined farm of Shanno, whose construction is similar to, though lighter than, that of the 'Castle'. The ruins indicate a rectangular building, circa 14m x 6m, of mortared boulder construction. Part of the ruins have been used as a sheepfold. Still known as Shanno Castle locally in 1971.

Period Notes
