Full Description

School built 1875-7, by William Aitkenhead of Aitkenhead and Mason of Arbroath. Originally built as Brechin High School, with later alterations including a complete remodel and extensions, dated to 1927-30 by the Forfarshire County Architect's Department. The original building has a symmetrical frontage of 2-storeys, 6-bays, either side of 3-storey 3-bay circular entrance tower. It is constructed of squared snecked rubble with ashlar dressings, with string-courses and moulded openings. The central bays to the north and south of the entrance tower are bipartite, the others are single windows and all with distinctive margin pane divides. The circular entrance tower is corbelled to an octagonal first floor and then corbelled back to a circular second floor. It has bellcast eaves, a tall slated concave coned roof with an open round louvre and a spired cupola top and a corbelled projecting piended dormer clock feature. The main piended slated roof has ogee type curves to the hips.
