Full Description

Episcopal Church built in 1888, designed by architects Ross and Macbeth. It has an Early Geometrical cruciform plan with nave, narrow aisles, narrow steep roofed chancel and transepts and a south west tower with a porch entrance. It is built with coursed blocks of tooled sandstone with simple ashlar surrounds and quoins. The windows of the aisle are pairs of lancet windows with similar sized lancets in the clerestory above. The gable of the transept has larger lancet windows and a cinquefoil round window in the apex. The north elevation is similar to the south, except there is no tower. The south-west entrance tower has a simple doorway with carved surrounds and hood mould. The two stage square tower has narrow pointed-arch (lancet) windows above a stringcourse and is capped by a temporary wooden gabled roof structure, ahead of a potential extension or spire. The tall slated roofs have decorative red ridge tiles and finials. Internally there are squat Peterhead granite circular piers and tall shafts with boldly sculptured capitals of French 12th/13th century type. The octagonal pulpit, built by Harry Hems and Sons, 1894, is of Painswick stone with Kilkenny marble shafts, with a carved frontage. The stained glass east window of the Crucifixion was by John Hardman and Co., 1888. The stained glass west window of the Sermon on the Mount was by Powell Brothers of Leeds. Within the church is a memorial tablet, 'In abiding memory of the men of this church congregation who gave their lives in the World Wars 1914-1918, 1939-1945'.
