Full Description

Church hall dated 1853, built as a diocesan library, school and dwelling house. The building consists of a 2-storey tall northern section (formerly the school) and a single-storey southern section (formerly the library and dwelling house). The decorated style of the tall northern section is coursed and snecked rubble with ashlar dressings. It is parallel-roofed on the west, right-angled at the east, with a doorpiece and bracketted gabled hood at south east gable. The east gable front of the hall has a large windowless opening over a built up doorway with a single order of shafts. On the south east corner is a dated, weathered coat of arms with the initials of 'A.P.F. I.M. 1853'. Alexander Penrose Forbes was the Bishop of Brechin at this time. The west gable has a depressed arched window of 4-lights with reticulated tracery. The north wall is windowless with a tall central chimney shaft. The single-storey southern section wing is at right angles to the north section, with 3-bay 2-light windows on each side, with a transverse porch on the south gable, with shouldered openings, in the Gothic Revival style of William Butterfield. Within the building (now Lodge St Ninian's No. 6) is a framed and glazed First World War Roll of Honour.
