Full Description

Mechanics Institute built in Tudor Gothic style 1838-42. Designed by John Henderson (Edinburgh). The institute was funded by William, Lord Panmure, the owner of Brechin Castle, to house the town's Grammar School, Parish School and Burgh School, with a lecture hall and library on the floor above. Symmetrical ashlar faced 2-storey building with a slim central tower, with 3-bays to each side of tower on the west (principal) elevation. Square headed 2-light windows with lying pane glazing, stone mullions and rectangular hood moulds, on both ground and first floors, which are transomed at the first floor. Steps lead up to the door in the central tower, with a tall slim arched window, clock and two tall belfry lights above. The tower has four corner polygonal angle buttresses terminating in pinnacles. There is a semi-octagonal canted bay on the south elevation with narrow bipartite windows.
