Full Description

Gate lodge dating from circa 1852, probably by Brown and Wardrop. Also known as West Lodge, or New Lodge, forming a west entrance gateway and walls for Brechin Castle (NO55NE0040). A 2-storey, 2-bay front, crow-stepped skew-gabled and gabletted lodge in Scots Baronial style on the west side of the gateway. Constructed of squared snecked rubble with a round tower and a conical fish-scale slated roof with finial. The lodge entrance is a single storey porch to the rear (south elevation), adjoining a window on a curved angle, corbelled to square above to the first floor gabletted single window. The windows are the original 12-pane sash and case and the roof slated. The entrance gateway is a buttressed, depressed arch with a stepped parapet, a central panel, rope hood moulding, with a smaller tourelle on the east side of the gateway and with the original timber and wrought iron gates. The coped squared snecked rubble high flanking curved walls have ball caps at the terminals. East of Brechin Castle Old Lodge and gateway (NO56SE0062).
