Full Description
Former corn mill, now disused, and a farmstead and cottage, still in use. The B-listed corn mill is dated 173, and it was possibly later rebuilt. There is a later southern addition, and there was repairs in 1876. The wheel is late-19th century. The steading and cottage are both shown on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps. On the 1st edition OS map, the corn mill is Z-plan, with a curved north end. A mill lade runs to the mill building from the west. It is split into two so that one goes through the mill building, and the other to the south. It then joins into one and runs to the south of the steading and cottage, re-joining the river to the east. The steading is U-plan, open to the south. To the south of the steading is an L-plan and a rectangular cottage with garden enclosures, and another square building. To the north is a well and rectangular building. On the 2nd edition OS map the north elevation of the mill is no longer curved. The court of the steading has been filled. The rectangular cottage to the south has been extended, and there is an additional small rectangular building. The rectangular building to the north has been removed, and a new one built further to the north. Current maps show the building to the north and the two small buildings building to the south have been removed. The B-listed former mill is single-storey and attic, with a higher kiln with a vent at the north end, and is constructed from rubble. The 10 feet (3 metres) undershot iron wheel was originally in the open on the south gable, but it is now covered by the south addition. The wheel recess is dated 1736, and is similar to the one at Blackhall (see NO56SE0069). By the time Hume describes the mill in 1977, it has become disused. Bee-boles in an outbuilding wall were noted in 1986.
Period Notes
The mill is dated 1736, and was possibly rebuilt later. There is a later addition, and repairs were carried out in 1876. The wheel is late-19th century. There are late-19th century alterations to the steading. The mill was listed on 11/06/1971.
