Full Description
Remains of a field system. At least 500 cairns lie spread over about 30 hectares between the approach road to Rome and the northeast side of the area known as Balconnel Wood. The cairns range from 1.2m to 9m in diameter. Also within the area are a number of stony banks. Some of the cairns may be burial cairns, as there is reference to an inhumation as having been found beneath one of the cairns in the 18th century. There is also a scatter of small cairns to the northeast of the road (NO 525 658). A pre-forestry survey was conducted for Historic Scotland by Headland Archaeology in January 1999 at the request of the Archaeology Service in this area. It revealed an extension to the field system with at least 87 cairns, a hut-circle, one enclosure, two sub-rectangular features and five linear banks. The majority of cairns are turf-covered and 1.5 to 6m in diameter and 0.15 to 0.7m high. Most are clearance cairns, although some of the larger recorded at the eastern end of the survey area could be burial cairns. The hut-circle, 8m in diameter, is defined by a low turf-covered stony bank, 0.2m high and 2-3m wide, with a possible entrance in the east. Only a small part of the system is scheduled.
