Full Description
L-plan Lairds house, still in use, and associated buildings. The house was built in the 17th century with later alterations in the 18th-19th centuries and an addition in 1934 by John Colville Cunningham, architect. It was also possibly used as an auxiliary hospital for the Red Cross during World War I. The southeast wing is the earliest part of the house. At the northern end of west elevation of the wing, in what was previously an external entrance, now internal, is a lintel stone dated 1691, and initialled 'TO' and 'AS'. The present main wing of the house extends to the west from the northern end of this early wing, creating an L-plan building. It was probably added in the 18th century and enlarged in 1934. There are various rear extensions from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The house has a harled exterior, and there are slate roofs. It is a 2-storey house throughout, although the earlier wing is lower than the more recent additions. A cottage lies just to the north. There is a U-plan range open to the west situated to the northwest of the house, labelled as 'Offices' on the 1st edition OS map. A walled garden with L-plan garden building lies to the west of the main house. The buildings all survive today, and a modern shallow U-plan building has been added to the east of the house.
Period Notes
