Full Description

Small mansion, or Laird's House, with a walled garden and steading buildings, still in residential use as a farmhouse. It was owned by the Kydds in the early-17th century, and by the Campbells in the late-17th century. The house was built in the 17th century as a castellated and fortified structure, but was remodelled and extended in circa 1840, at which time the fortified elements were removed. The walled garden was built in the late-17th century. The U-plan house is shown on the 1st edition OS map with a walled garden to the South-East, joining the South-East end elevation. There is a well to the North, a large U-plan steading open to the South-East, but with two buildings filling much of the opening. Mid-way along the North-East wing is a circular horsemill. There is a small square building directly to the South, and a rectangular building to the North of the steading. On the 2nd edition OS map, the horsemill has been removed, and two buildings added to the East side of this wing. A long rectangular building has been added to the North-West of the steading, and another adjacent to the South-West wing. A cottage has also been added circa 200 metres to the West of the house. The buildings depicted on the 1st edition OS map remains otherwise unchanged. The U-plan steading has been almost entirely incorporated or replaced by modern farm buildings. A section of the North-West wing possibly remains incorporated to the rear. The rectangular building to the North-West of the steading has also been replaced with a modern barn. The building to the North of the steading has since gone, as has the well to the North of the house. The cottage to the West has been either replaced or incorporated into a much longer cottage, and two modern cottages have been added along the road between it and the house. The two-storey Laird's house is harled, with slate roofs and ridge and end stacks. It is a shallow U-plan, open to the South-West, with the main wing projecting slightly to the South-East and the North-West wing projecting slightly to the rear. The angle between this projecting wing and the North-East elevation is filled by a single storey lean-to extension, covering most of this elevation. The North-East gable end of the North-West wing has a similar extension. There is an inset stone over the entrance initialled 'AC' and 'EC' (of the Campbell family), and dated 1680. Only the North-Western section of the walled garden remains, with rubble walls that are on average 8 feet (2.4 metres) high. Also known as Carsgownie.

Period Notes
House built in the early-17th century, with an inset stone dated 1680, possibly from when the Campbell family took over the house. The walled garden was built in the late 17th century. The house was remodelled in circa 1840, and there are various 19th century and modern alterations and additions to the various steading buildings. The house was listed on 11/06/1971, and the walled garden on 15/01/1980.
