Full Description

Pictish symbol stone (Aberlemno No. 2). An upright cross-slab of Old Red Sandstone, 2.28m high by 1.27m wide at the bottom and tapering to 0.9m wide at the top, by 20cm thick. The ornament is partly incised and partly relief, consisting of a cross edged by spirals, flanked by intertwined animals and a pair of hippocamps (a sea horse that was half horse, half fish with a serpent's tail) and on the reverse a pair of toothsome beasts heads, the two-legged rectangle with Z-rod, the triple disc, and a battle scene consisting of three rows of figures. This scene has been interpreted as the Pictish victory of the battle of Dunnichen in 685 AD, with the bareheaded Picts routing the helmeted Angles. It is situated in the graveyard of Aberlemno Parish Church (NO55NW0028).
