Full Description

Melgund Mill is depicted on the OS map of 1846 as a corn mill. There are two ranges of buildings lying roughly parallel to each other, the western one of which is longer than the other. The mill was fed by lades leading from a pond in the south. Today the western building is derelict but the eastern one appears to be still roofed. A programme of historic building recording was conducted by Headland Archaeology in August 2008 prior to development works going ahead. It was concluded that the current form of the Mill probably relates to the early to mid 19th century although elements of the building are almost certainly earlier. The mill was recorded as a 2-storey unroofed building in a partially ruinous condition, which appears to be a fairly typical example of a rural corn mill serving the local farming community. On the ground floor it would have formerly housed a low breast-shot water wheel served by a lade running off the burn and a corn-drying kiln. The grinding machinery and drying floor would have been located on the first floor. All remaining space would have been used for the storage of grain and the bi-products of milling.
