Full Description

A desk based assessment and walkover survey carried out by HAS in 2014 ahead of proposed development recorded a number of field boundary walls and banks, as depicted on historic OS maps. Drystone walls, with fine carved stone gateposts, form the boundaries of some of the fields, the walls of double skin construction with capstones. Their state of preservation varies but they stand up to 1.5m high in places. One section of drystone wall at NO5639442587 to NO5640442565 is of slightly different character to other local field boundaries although constructed of the same stone: it is curving and in a poorer state of preservation. A turf-covered bank running from NO566342982 - NO5664443159 - NO5646443119 may be the degraded remains of a drystone wall. Within the woodland between NO5662043168 and NO5669643196 is a length of ditch and bank, the ditch 2m wide, the bank to the north 1.3m wide. A small pile of stones at NO5597942614 probably represents field clearance. A watching brief was carried out in October 2015 by HAS prior to the proposed development, with a focus on observing work on the turf-covered bank (F2 in walkover survey), although a total of six trenches were excavated in the north-western and north-eastern fields. At least two phases of enclosures were recorded, with the earliest (F2) possibly dating from the early-19th century or earlier, and three different types of land drains were also recorded. No features, deposits or artefacts of archaeological significance were identified.
