Full Description

Remains of a windmill, possibly dating to early 19th century. It is depicted on the 1st edition OS map as a circular feature standing alone, and depicted as 'Wind Mill', but by the 2nd edition OS map it is depicted as 'Old Windmill'. It is a tall tapering tower circa 60 feet (18 metres) high and 18 feet (5.5 metres) in diameter at ground level, and is constructed of rubble masonry which has been heavily pointed. Halfway up the outside of the tower is a 10 cm (4 inches) thick, 50 cm (20 inches) wide, projecting course of stone slabs, probably used as a reefing stage. On the south-east face there is a groove where a building, probably a threshing machine, once adjoined the tower. The windmill working have been removed and the tower has been capped, but at the time of the Scottish Windmills Survey (1979), some of this capping had fallen away.
