Full Description

Monument to Dr James Thomson of Cromarty, who died during the Crimean War, and which was built in 1857 by Alexander Urquhart, contractor. Dr James Thomsom cared for Russian wounded after the Battle of Alma, 1854, and died of exhaustion shortly after. The land was given by Sir Charles R MacGrigor, a friend of Thomson. The monument itself was paid for through public subscription. It is a circa 65 feet (20 metres) high obelisk, built of polished Peterhead granite ashlar on a stepped base, and a memorial plaque on the South elevation of the base. It stands on the site of Forres Castle (NJ05NW0017).
