Full Description

Farmstead, still in use, depicted on historic OS maps. The OS 1st edition 25 inch shows a quadrangular steading with a horsemill on the west side. Southeast of the steading are the house, a long building along the base of the Mound (NO53SW0010), and a garden south of the house with attached building on its west side. By the time of the 2nd edition OS map, part of the steading court had been infilled by buildings, and new structures added to the east and north. The site has been suggested as one possible location for a grange of the Cistercian monastery of Balmerino. There are documentary references to a Grange of Barrie in the 16th century. Site visit by SUAT in 2001 found no visible evidence of this.
