Full Description

Former lighthouse and related buildings. The Low Lighthouse and Keeper's houses on Buddon Ness were built in 1865-6 by the Stevenson Engineers. The lighthouse is a circular building, similar to the High Lighthouse to the North-West (NO53SW0021), but shorter, at 61 feet (18.6 metres) high. It is constructed of pale yellow brick in English Garden Wall bond, and was once painted white. It is now disused. Because the entrance channel of the River Tay was altering with the slow movement of sandbanks, the tower on Buddon Ness was moved bodily 160 feet (48.7m) to the North in 1884 so as to form a pair of leading marks on the new alignment with the High Light. The Keepers' Houses were left in their original location, they are now unroofed and in dangerous condition and have been fenced off. The standing remains are a small part of a larger building, visible on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps, and are still visible from aerial photography. It was recorded during coastal zone assessment survey carried out by SCAPE between February and March 2009. It currently sits within a landscape used for military training (NO53SW0056)
