Full Description
Two lighthouses and related buildings. The original lighthouse on the site was built in circa 1820, and it is now truncated and annexed to the keeper's house. It was formerly 85 feet (26 metres) high, is circular with painted stucco. The keeper's house is two storeys, with the old lighthouse incorporated into the North end. It has slate roofs and ridge and end stacks. The present High Lighthouse, now disused, was built by the Stevenson Engineers in 1865-6. It is a circular graduated column 103 feet (31.4 metres) high, constructed of brick with stone dressings. It sits to the North-West of the previous lighthouse. High Lighthouse is paired with Low Lighthouse, circa 370 metres to the South-East (NO53SW0055). It was recorded during coastal zone assessment survey carried out by SCAPE between February and March 2009. It currently sits within a landscape used for military training (NO53SW0056)
Period Notes
The Old High lighthouse was built in 1820.The later lighthouse was built in 1865-6. High lighthouse Listed 11/06/1971. Old lighthouse Listed 15/01/1980.
