Full Description

War memorial erected in 2015 commemorating two Angus First World War Victoria Cross recipients, George Samson and Charles Jarvis. The two commemorative paving stone plaques are set into the side of the monument, a large standing stone. Charles Jarvis was awarded the VC for his gallantry on 23 August 1914 at the Battle of Jemappes, during which he worked under heavy fire to demolish the bridge. Born in Fraserburgh, he was living in Carnoustie when he joined the army, reaching the rank of Lance Corporal in the 57th Field Company Royal Engineers at the outbreak pf the war. There is also a commemorative stone in Saltoun Gardens, Fraserburgh (Aberdeenshire HER NJ96NE0116). George Samson, Royal Naval Reserve who was born in Carnoustie, was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions on 25 April 1915 during amphibious landings of the Gallipoli Campaign whilst serving on SS River Clyde which was being used to transport troops onto 'V' beach. Both men are also commemorated in street names in Carnoustie (NO53SE0057 and NO53SE0014) . Plaques dedicated to Jarvis and Samson were unveiled on the Carnoustie War Memorial (NO53SE0014) in 2012.
