Full Description
Commemorative street name, and site of memorial plaque. A commemorative plaque to First World War Victoria Cross recipient, Lance Corporal Charles Jarvis, after whom the road was named, was erected by the Royal British Legion. Jarvis was the first man to be awarded the Victoria Cross in the First World War, for his gallantry in blowing up the Bridge of Jemappes to cover the retreat of the army to Mons. Born in Fraserburgh, he spent his early years in Carnoustie. The original plaque has been removed to the British Legion Hall, but a slightly altered copy has been added to the Carnoustie War Memorial (NO53SE0014) and a new street sign acknowledging Charles Jarvis has been placed in Jarvis Place. Jarvis is also commemorated by a stone paving slab placed in Saltoun Gardens, Fraserburgh (adjacent to his birthplace) on 23 August 2014 Fraserburgh on the 100th anniversary of his feat of bravery (Aberdeenshire HER NJ96NE0116).
