Full Description
War memorial situated in the High Street facing south. It was designed by James Pain Bruce and unveiled by the Earl of Strathmore on 31 October 1925. The memorial is set within a Rest Garden which was completed in 1926. A curved wall encloses a circular raised platform on which stands a statue of a soldier on a square plinth. The plaque on the plinth commemorates losses in the First World War, whilst another on the facing wall of the platform commemorates those lost in the Second World War. Names of the dead are inscribed on plaques on the inner face of the wall. In front of the wall is a formal garden. Full transcription of memorial held in AAS Digital Archive. Plaques dedicated to two World War I Victoria Cross recipients, Lance Corporal Charles Jarvis (born in Fraserburgh but spent his early years in Carnoustie) and Petty Officer George Mackenzie Samson, were added to the memorial in 2012, unveiled 16/10/12. They comprise slightly altered copies of the original plaques (NO53SE0057 and NO53SE0058) which had been placed in streets named after the recipients. The originals were to be taken to the British Legion Hall, and new street signs acknowledging the recipients have been placed at the original locations (Jarvis Place and Samson Place). Jarvis is also commemorated by a stone paving slab placed in Saltoun Gardens, Fraserburgh (adjacent to his birthplace) on 23 August 2014 Fraserburgh on the 100th anniversary of his feat of bravery (Aberdeenshire HER NJ96NE0116).
