Full Description
Former textile mill/ jute mill. Panmure Works is shown on the OS maps from the 1st edition (circa 1846) onwards. The site has been much altered. Hume described it in the 1970s as built 1857 for Smieton and Co, linen manufacturers. A large block of single-storey weaving sheds, with ancillary buildings, including a handsome 2-storey, 21 bay calender shop, facing the railway. The roof beams in the weaving shed are wooden, with wrought-iron bracing and cast-iron straining posts. There is a red brick chimney, with 'GRANTS' in white brick. Now a warehouse. At its height the works had 600 staff, and 400 power looms producing 6 million yards of jute and linen annually. Smieton also built housing the in the surrounding area for his employees.
