Full Description
Remains of a water-powered mill, which formerly produced bobbins and ancillary wooden parts for the cotton industry. It is depicted as a sawmill on the 1st edition OS map but labelled as a Bobbin Turning Mill on the 2nd edition map of 1900. A mill lade leads from the Culsten Burn to the northwest. A Level 1 Standing Building Survey of the building was carried out in 2012 by MAS in advance of its redevelopment into residential accommodation. The survey revealed the mill had been adapted from being water-driven to using a steam-powered engine. The substantial stone built chimney on the site is shown on the 1st edition OS map, suggesting that the steam-powered engine was in use by 1867. Documentary research by J Gilliatt records that the bobbin mill was originally established by David Jamie, but by 1861 was being run by Alexander Pithie and his sons who lived at Turnerhall. It was initially powered by water, later supplemented by a steam engine added in 1879. It consisted of several wooden buildings on stone footings, plus a stone built boiler house with chimney - the mill produced bobbins from birchwood, which (at least latterly) were rough-cut and sent on to the bobbin mill in Aberdeen for finishing for use the Jute industry in Dundee and India. The mill was operated by three generations of the Pithie family thorugh until 1942 when it was sold to the owners of Lady Mill in Aberdeen. It closed in 1952 and was later used to supply pit props and railway sleepers and then to house pigs.
