Full Description

Possible kiln, stone spread and cultivation remains recorded during survey carried out by AOC Archaeology in 1996 (see also NO49NE0006). At NO49069906 is a rectilinear stony spread, obscured by dense vegetation at the time of survey, of maximum extent 15 m and up to 0.3 m high. although unclear if this represents the remains of a stone structure of a field clearance heap. Some distance to the southeast (NO49179896) are the remains of a rectangular enclosure, 13 m by 5 m, the walls of embanked earth although a few large stones were visible. A little to the southeast at NO49169897 are the remains of a possible corn-drying kiln, comprising a low turf-clad mound of stones and earth with a central hollow. The kiln is circa 2 m wide and maximum 0,25 m high: possibly a clearance cairn although the hollow centre suggests a possible kiln. South of this are four groups of broad-ridge cultivation remains, extending over a total area of circa 5 ha. The ridges are low and poorly defined.
