Full Description
The mill of Dinnet is depicted on the OS 1st edition map of 1867 as having seven buildings, two of which are L-shaped. A lade leads from a mill pond to the north of the road. To the west of the mill are two small buildings one with an attached enclosure. By the 2nd edition the pond has gone and the lade is fed from the Dinnet Burn to the north. The mill has been altered to a Z-shape with another building added to the east side. A second small group of buildings lie to the southwest of it. The buildings to the west are now disused and a small gravel quarry lies between them. Now, the mill has been greatly altered and houses stand in the area, with a hatchery to the south. A watching brief was carried out in July and September 2009 by MAS over the ground works associated with the construction of new offices and a car park in the southern area of this site. Observation of the excavation of an access road revealed two sections of what may be the 19th Century lade system. This area was full of ash and rubbish indicating that these features had been considerably disturbed in the past. The area of the new office development and car park was heavily disturbed by tree felling and subsequent tree root removal. No archaeological features or finds were evident in this area.
