Full Description

Remains of a church, one of the last churches in Scotland to have a thatched roof. The date of construction is not clear, although the church is mentioned at the beginning of the 17th century. It was in use until the middle of the 18th century, when a new parish church was built in Aboyne in 1763. The church was dedicated to St Lesmo or St Marnoch. Only the crowstepped west gable and the low footings of the north wall survive. Built of pink and grey granite rubble. There is an Infilled window to the west (exterior) elevation with chamfered reveals. A tombstone is set into the east (interior) elevation. The interior is a level rectangular area containing modern graves. There are no distinctive architectural features to assist dating and the dedication is not known locally. The rectangular-plan churchyard gas granite rubble boundary wall with rubble coping, a datestone to right of iron gate in the south wall reading '18.1884'. The churchyard contains a variety of tombstones.

Period Notes
