Full Description

Farmstead, in use, depicted on the 1st edition OS map as an L-plan steading. On the 2nd edition OS map, the east wing of the steading has been extended southwards, while a new rectangular building has been added to the southeast. Today, the steading appears to survive but has been altered and extended. The building to the southeast is not shown on current maps, In 2010, Alder Archaeology undertook a Level 1 standing building survey on several buildings due to be demolished. The work revealed that the long narrow building now used as a milk parlour was once a cow byre with large openings to the west (now blocked) which would have opened onto a yard in front of the farmhouse. Several areas of sub-angular pink stonework were identified in the walls of the milk parlour/byre which may date to the original construction of the farmhouse, probably in the early 19th century. However, much of the stonework used in the walls of the milk parlour/byre contained angular circular-sawn grey sandstone blocks, showing that this building was heavily re-built in the late 19th or early 20th century. The other buildings investigated were found to have been added in the post war period.
