Full Description

Remains of a weaving factory complex. Described by Hume in 1974 as 'mid 19th century. Two blocks of single storey rubble north-light weaving sheds'. The 2006 map shows that the area has been partially cleared, but that there are two buildings still in use which are shown on the (circa 1888) 2nd edition OS map. Documentary research by J Gilliatt has also recorded a turning mill on Service Road which may have been part of these works. The turning mill was in operation from 1864, the proprietor Alexander Johnston recorded as employing 13 men and 9 boys in 1871. It is probable that the products would have included bobbins. It had closed by 1951 when it was roofless but up for sale. The exact location and nature of the premises is unclear.
