Full Description
Former mill, with windmill, in residential use, dating to the 18th-19th centuries. The windmill was part of a large mill/farm complex, depicted on the 1st edition OS map as an L-plan threshing barn, with what appears to be a horse-engine attached to the southwest corner, and an L-plan and rectangular steading to the south. By the 2nd edition map, the L-plan threshing barn has been enlarged, as have the buildings to the south. These buildings all appear to survive, alongside the windmill, but have been converted to residential accommodation. The windmill is a tall tapered tower, 12.3 metres (40 feet) high and 6 metres (20 feet) in diameter at the base, constructed of sandstone rubble. At 6.5 metres (21 feet) above the ground level there is a course of stone slabs, 10cm (4 inches) thick and projecting 90cm (11 inches), which formed a reefing stage. The threshing barn is a 2-storey barn, with several openings into the building. A new cap has been fitted to the windmill and some re-pointing work has been carried out. There is a single-storey L-plan harled cottage with margins. There is a 2-storey harled farmhouse with ashlar chimneys, a back wing and a stone slate roof. There are early 19th century single-storey and basement additions with a 4-window and central door front elevation, with an ashlar parapet and railed steps.
Period Notes
