Full Description
An 18th-century Principal Messuage or Laird's House, harled, with a slate roof. The original two-storey core of the building is a 16th-century building, the former Dower House, which underwent alterations c1711 in preperation for the building becoming the Principal Messuage for James Carnegie's marriage to Margaret Bennet. The Marriage Contract from this period describes a complex with office houses, yards and orchards. A further document from 1716 (the Deposition of Andrew Ferrier) refers to the house as having "back windows and private entries". There have been further alterations since.
Whilst modest in scale, the house was the functional and legal seat of the Finhaven Carnegies from 1712 to 1777. Its status as a gentleman’s residence is underscored by contemporary accounts of the early 18th-century, including the events leading to the landmark 1728 murder trial for the accidental killing of the 6th Earl of Strathmore (the Not Guilty verdict), which confirmed it as the primary site of hospitality and residence for James Carnegie and his family.
The house is shown on the Ordnance Survey 1st and 2nd edition maps as a L-plan building set in spacious gardens, with a long rectangular-plan northwest wing with outbuildings to the east and north.
