Full Description
Country house and estate, still in use. It was built in 1865 by Carver and Symon, architects, to the west of the ruins of Finavon Castle (NO45NE0018). The 1st edition OS map shows a quadrangular steading with an entrance in the south-west corner, named 'East Mains', sited just to the northwest of the present house. By the time of the 2nd edition OS map, the steading had been removed and the present house built to the south-east, shown as an L-plan building, with a rear wing projecting to the north. The house is a large, three-storey Baronial mansion house with four-storey corner tower and a servants' wing to the rear, part of which was demolished in 1970. To the west of the house the 2nd edition map shows three rectangular buildings, the larger of which are stables, and a greenhouse within a walled garden. Current maps indicate that the greenhouse has been removed and the walled garden area altered. A vaulted underground chamber found in 2016 to the northwest of the house appears to relate to the East Mains steading, although its function is unclear.
Period Notes
It was built in 1865, and the rear wing was partially demolished in 1970. It was listed on 15/01/1980.
