Full Description

Remains of a World War II chain home radar station, RAF Douglas Wood, established in 1939. The Chain Home stations gave early warning of incoming air raids. It is spread over three areas, with the transmitter block and masts centred on NO 4877 4146, the receiver block and masts centred NO 4844 4115, and the accommodation camp centred NO 4954 4175. Around the installations were at least five Type 27 octagonal anti-aircraft pillboxes. The features are visible on RAF aerial photographs taken in 1947. The accommodation camp comprised at least 23 huts of varying sizes. The pillboxes are Type 27, octagonal anti-aircraft pill-boxes. To the southeast of the pillbox at NO 49386 41818 (built on a prehistoric barrow, see NO44SE0030) the 1947 photograph shows at least five Nissen type huts. Many of the buildings and mast bases remain. The pillbox at the south corner of the transmitter compound was photographed in 2005 by AAS. An air raid shelter stood at NO48384117.
