Full Description

Church Hall, built in the mid to later 19th century. It is depicted on the OS 2nd edition map, annotated as the United Free Church Hall. Known as the South Church Galls (or Small Hall) it was built in 1858 by the Monifieth Free Church and became a preaching station in 1869 and was made a full ministerial charge in 1871. After The South Church was built in 1872 in Hill Street, this High Street building was used as hall accommodation. A standing building survey was carried out by Rathmell Archaeology in 2017 ahead of proposed demolition. It comprises two rectangular buildings that form the overall church halls, one the original 1858 Preaching Hall with the later Main hall and associated rooms forming a later 19th century extension. At the east end of the southeast elevation, is the original hall with a date stone inscribed 1858, a belfry, and three rectangular windows. In the centre of the southeast elevation is the main entrance, of light brown sandstone blocks with 'South Church Halls' carved over the top of the lintel: a 'U' and an 'F' have been removed. On the southwestern bay (the Main Hall) are three arched windows which have been blocked with an arched air vent at the top of the bay. Internally the Preaching Hall has a blocked fireplace at the northwest end, but no original features. The main hall is rectangular with wood panelling over the lower 1.2m of the walls, the ceiling of exposed timber joists.
